This is a recording of a talk I gave for the Synod of the Evangelical Church of Greece in March 2022. I draw a model for cultural critique out of Paul’s treatment of Greek wisdom and Jewish signs in 1 Corinthians 1, and then reflect on our own culture’s deepest values, which I argue are freedom and efficiency. I show how, following Paul, the cross is both the implacable antithesis of these values, and also their deepest fulfilment.
